| Description | Põlva with its population of about 7000 is situated in the southeast of Estonia and is the centre of the county Põlvamaa. It lies on the lower course of the Ora River in the primeval valley (knows as Maarja valley). The older part of the town runs along Kanepi - Räpina road and ends at the parting of Tartu, Ihamaru and Võru roads. The newer part has been built in the surroundings of the railway station that is 43 km from Tartu and 45 km from Petseri. The industrial and construction firms in this region make up the so-called Jaama Street district. Fine private houses in Ähniorg make up a wonderful garden-suburb. In the second half of the 19th century a small borough came into being at Põlva church and parsonage. Before the World War II there were 484 people living in Põlva, but the extension of the railway line in 1931 became an important turning point for the whole region. It began to develop and grew first into the district centre (since 1950), then into a County town (1961) and finally into town (1993). The population of Põlva is very young - the average age 34, with 28 percent of children and 59 percent of grown-ups. About 70 percent of all industrial goods of the county are produced in Põlva. |
