The Kursiu Nerija is a sandy peninsula approximately 50 km long, the largest part of which belongs to Lithuanian Republic.From one side it is washed by the waterways of the large Kursiu Lagoon, and from the other, the Baltic Sea.There is almost no fertile land since approximately 25 % of the territory consists of sandy plains.The wind from the sea and lagoon have formed high sand dunes,some of which are more than 60 meters high.The sand has generally presented a lot of trouble for the inhabitants of this region.Some time ago sand storms covered entire fishing villages with sand and people had evacuated their homes. Today the Kursiu Nerija has a popular Lithuanian resort called Neriga.It consists of four settlements - Juodkrante, Pervalka, Preila and Nida.All them has excellent hotels,sanatoriums,cafes,restaurants and pubs.All the settlements are famous for their excellent beaches where one can not only rest but also engage in various kinds of water sports.
In Nida on the top of the Parnidzio Dune there is a sand clock.This location is quite unique since here as in the middle of the ocean one can determine one`s precise co-ordinates and the local time.In 1930-1932 Nobel Prize-winner Thomas Mann stayed in Nida during his vacation.Today his little house harbours a memorial museum.Every year there is a Thomas Mann festival featuring classical music concerts, literary readings,film reviews,art exhibits,meetings with the scholars |
